What Is SAP EDI Integration?

SAP EDI integration lets SAP send and receive business documents - purchase orders, order acknowledgements, advance ship notices, invoices and payments - with your trading partners automatically, with no re-keying.

SAP creates and reads documents as IDocs. An EDI translator converts each IDoc to and from the format your partner uses, such as ANSI X12 or EDIFACT, and exchanges it over AS2, SFTP, a VAN or an API. For documents to post in SAP without manual work, the SAP side has to be set up correctly: partner profiles, output determination, partner and material number mapping, pricing and master data. That SAP side is where most EDI projects run into trouble, and it's where CONTAX is strongest.

Everything Your SAP EDI Needs

From the first trading partner to a full EDI program, handled by SAP specialists.

SAP-Side Configuration

IDoc types, partner profiles, output determination, EDPAR and customer material mapping, pricing checks and inbound processing, set up so documents post automatically instead of landing in an error queue.

EDI Mapping and Translation

Maps between SAP IDocs and X12, EDIFACT, VDA, XML and flat files, built from an extensive library of pre-built maps, including maps compatible with IBM Sterling B2Bi and Gentran.

Trading Partner Onboarding

Setup, testing and certification with retailers, distributors, 3PLs, carriers and banks, so you meet each partner's requirements and avoid compliance chargebacks.

SAP EDI Integration FAQ

How does EDI work with SAP?

SAP exchanges business documents as IDocs. Outbound, output determination creates an IDoc (for example an invoice or ship notice) and passes it to an EDI translator, which converts it to the partner's format and sends it. Inbound, the translator converts the partner's document into an IDoc that SAP posts automatically, such as a sales order from an 850 purchase order.

Which SAP systems do you support?

SAP ECC, SAP S/4HANA, and S/4HANA under RISE with SAP. With RISE, the connection between SAP and the EDI platform typically runs through the SAP Cloud Connector, which we set up as part of the project.

Which EDI transactions can you set up?

All of the common ones, including the 850, 855, 856, 810, 820, 846, 940/945, 943/944 and 830/862, and their EDIFACT equivalents, plus custom formats such as XML, JSON, flat files and spreadsheets for partners that don't use EDI standards.

Do we need EDI expertise in-house?

No. With Arcus, CONTAX runs your EDI end to end: the platform, maps, partner onboarding, monitoring and error resolution. If you have an EDI team, we can work alongside them instead.

How long does it take to onboard a new trading partner?

Usually a matter of weeks. The biggest factors are how quickly the partner can test and how ready your SAP master data is. Pre-built maps for common retailers, 3PLs and transactions shorten the work considerably.

Can you take over from our current EDI provider?

Yes. We migrate maps and partner connections one partner at a time, testing each before switching, so orders, shipments and invoices keep flowing throughout.

What does SAP EDI integration cost?

Arcus managed EDI is priced per document based on volume, with no software subscription or implementation costs, and with partner onboarding, map changes and VAN fees included. It can reduce EDI costs by up to 90% compared with running EDI in-house. Project work is quoted after a short discovery call about your partners and transactions.

What happens to our EDI when we move to S/4HANA or RISE with SAP?

EDI keeps working if it's planned as part of the migration: IDoc ports and partner profiles, output configuration, connectivity to the EDI platform and every partner's test cases all need checking before cutover. We include this in the migration plan.
